Liberty, Equality, Sorority!

Austria’s first newspaper for women was published by Anton Tedeschi in Graz as from 1792. It reflected the image of women of the time as well as the ideals of Enlightenment: Women were addressed in their role as wives and mothers and at the same time they were informed about political events because they were supposed to be as educated as their husbands. When censorship became stricter for fear of revolutionary riots, the content shifted more and more from politics to entertainment. The newspaper was discontinued in 1797.
