Plan of the Facade of a Detached House Anonymous, 1950s
Part of the City but not Urban
Those who made the dream of having their own homes for their young families and themselves come true with an architect’s help in the 1950s did not think of the community. Because the most popular type of housing in this city is not urban. With its land usage, the Austrian version of the detached one-family house is not ecological or sustainable too—because it is often underpopulated in the end, with one or two residents. The built “castle” of one’s own private sphere inhibits a compact cityscape and takes public transport, which requires high population density, to the limits of feasibility.
